And iPod touch features a touchscreen QWERTY keyboard perfect for browsing the web in Safari, searching for videos on YouTube, finding music on the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, entering calendar events, or adding new contacts.

New Apple iPod TouchAmbient Light Sensor

The iPod touch display has an ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts brightness to suit the ambient light in your surroundings. The result? A better experience for you and battery-saving efficiency for iPod touch.

New Apple iPod TouchAccelerometer

An accelerometer detects when you rotate iPod touch from portrait to landscape, then automatically changes the contents of the display, so you immediately see the entire width of a web page, your music in Cover Flow, or a photo in its proper aspect ratio.

iPhone Apps FREE on Touch

iphoneapps

FREE

A new tap-to-install method to install the iPhone Apps into your iPod touch emerged. It’s super easy. Here’s how to do it:

First, add http://applerepo.com/ as a new “Source” for your Installer. Do this by going to installer (See how to Jailbreak post if you don't have this), and clicking on 'Sources' in the bottom right hand corner. You will get this screen:

soeces

Click 'Edit' in the top-right corner, and then 'Add', in the left corner. Type in http://applerepo.com. Click save.

After refreshing your Installer, you’ll find two new categories, “iPhone 1.1.1 Apps” and “iPhone 1.1.2 Apps”. Select your choice depending on your firmware version; do not install the wrong version.

3. You’ll see all the iPhone Apps, plus “Prep” apps for Mobile Mail and Google Map. You must install these first. Make your selection and follow the instructions. Be sure to read the Warning Notice.

iPod Touch 1.1.3 Jailbreak

The Dev Team has done it again!

This will not be coming out until the end of March, when the Software Developer's Kit comes out, for fear of Apple patching it before then. Until that comes out, don't upgrade if you want to keep your apps.

iPod Touch 1.1.3 Firmware Released

Apple have recently released Firmware 1.1.3 for the Ipod Touch. This has a few advantages over its predecessor:

  • Rearrange your home screen. Great, but you can already do this in Customize.
  • The Ability to add Mail, Weather, Stocks, Notes and Maps for £12.99 ($20). You can do this in installer for free (See the guide to get iphone apps).

That's about it on the visible side of things for the touch. So if you want to keep all your programs and Installer, don't upgrade. When you do, it will take them all away.

There is a jailbreak for 1.1.3, see my post.

Here's a video in the meantime:

That is not me by the way!

Computer-Free Jailbreak 1.1.1

Jailbreaking is opening your ipod up, so that you can put third party applications on it. Jailbreaking is easy, and once you have done it you will have a new icon on your ipod touch - Installer. Go into this, and there are hundreds of programs that you can automatically download and install on your ipod touch. Some of these programs include games, Instant messenger, email, google maps, weather, and others. If your ipod breaks, and you need to return it to get it fixed under warranty, it is advisable to restore your ipod to factory settings, in itunes.

It has a lot more chance of working if your ipod touch (or iphone, for that matter) is new, but it is not completely necessary. For this method, you do not need to connect your ipod to a computer.

1. MAKE SURE YOU ARE RUNNING FIRMWARE 1.1.1. To check this, get your ipod touch and tap settings, then 'General', then 'About'. Go six down to where it says 'Version'.

Settings

Opposite will be a number like 1.1.1, 1.1.2 etc. If it is 1.1.1 go to step 3. If not, continue reading.

2. You need to get hold of a copy of the 1.1.1 firmware. You can download it here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=V7H8X2QQ (If you are having problems with that please comment and I'll try to upload it to my own server) Save it to somewhere on your computer. Now connect your ipod touch, and get itunes. If it tries to sync, stop it. Now hold down shift, and press the 'Update' button on the main ipod page in itunes.

Find your 1.1.1 firmware and click 'Open'. It will start to update. (This will not delete your songs and videos etc) Give it time. Once it has finished, disconnect your ipod.

3. On your ipod touch, go to Safari and type in the address jailbreakme.com.

jail

Read what it says and then scroll to the bottom, where there is a button that says 'Install AppSnap'. Click this and WAIT. Safari will close. Keep waiting until you see the 'Slide To Unlock' Screen. If you see a new icon called 'Installer', It has worked. (Comment if it didn't).

4. Enjoy! You can install loads of programs and games. One useful thing to install is the Ipod Touch Calendar Fix, which will let you add calendar events. Once you click on the Installer Icon, wait a while, and you will get this screen: (You must be connected to the Internet)

installer

Along the bottom are 5 buttons. If you want to install a program, tap 'Install'. Select a category, then a program. Your screen will then look something like this:

package

Tap install (at the top), and your program will be installed. Once it is done, press the home button on your ipod touch,

and wait for the 'Slide To Unlock' screen. Unlock, and if you installed a program, there will be a new icon. Tap and enjoy!

If you need any help please leave a comment or contact me about anything touch related.
